The Micro Insurance Academy (MIA) is a Delhi-based Charitable Trust (NGO) dedicated to providing technical assistance in insurance domain-knowledge to organizations that focus on grassroots communities. With over 40 professionals in its Delhi office, the MIA is the largest global microinsurance resource center. The MIA also carries out the research needed for data collection & analysis underlying effective interventions and impact evaluation.

About the Job

The MIA is a rapidly expanding Indian NGO based in New Delhi. In order to keep pace with our growth, we seek to a appoint self-motivated, out-of-the-box thinking Deputy Director of Operations.

Job Description

The Deputy Director of Operations will report to the Director of Operations and is responsible for strengthening the organization's internal processes and infrastructure that will allow MIA to fulfill its mission. The Deputy Director of Operations will provide oversight and implementation of all aspects of MIA's office operations. The Deputy Director of Operations, with the Director of Operations and the Director of Research and Training, is a key member of the MIA senior management team and will be called upon to represent the MIA at a variety of levels.

The Deputy Director of Operations will be groomed to assume the Director of Operations position. Those interested in a short-term assignment need not apply.

Specific responsibilities include
  • Overseeing and liaising between project managers, partners and head of fundraising
  • Overseeing IT and HR departments
  • Overseeing all aspects of general country operations in India, logistics and administration included
  • Minimal Financial/Accounting support
  • Overseeing the MIA's Process Mapping and Documentation work
  • Acting as a liaison between management and staff and providing office support for management as needed
  • Supporting MIA's advisory services unit
  • Representing the MIA with relevant external partners and business contacts
  • Developing a sound understanding of the MIA's programs such that the he/she can substitute for the Director of Operations as required
  • Overseeing preparation of materials for management and other meetings as well as taking minutes, as necessary
  • Assisting with scheduling, confirming meetings, and record keeping/tracking as necessary
Qualifications required
  • At least 5 years experience of operational support or management of a NGO or development projects in India or similar context; preferably in senior level positions
  • Master's degree or equivalent professional experience required
  • Proven personnel management and problem solving experience
  • Good working knowledge of computer software (The MIA is a quasi Open Source environment)
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, strong interpersonal skills, ability to communicate successfully with a wide range of diverse audiences
  • Excellent organizational skills with demonstrated ability to manage large amounts of information and prioritize work
  • Willingness to travel to and within remote and/or rural areas of India and internationally
  • Flexibility, adaptability, culturally sensitive, team player
  • Commitment to MIA's mission
  • Self starter and extremely organized multi-tasker with attention to detail and deadlines
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and complete projects on tight deadlines
  • Excellent analytical and financial skills
  • Ability to lead and work as part of a team
  • Out-of-the-box thinker with a sense of humor is a must
  • Indian national with an international background preferred
  • Must be fluent in English with excellent writing skills, Hindi a plus.
